Investigative Journalist
I’m Kamran Malekpour, born in Tehran in 1976. My professional life has been a blend of two seemingly distinct passions: veterinary medicine and journalism. While these fields may appear unrelated, they have given me a unique perspective, allowing me to understand society, nature, and the intricate relationship between humans and their environment.
Education and Early Life
I completed my primary and secondary education in Tehran. In 1995, I enrolled in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Azad University of Karaj. I was raised in an academically-oriented family; my father was a distinguished orthopedic surgeon and a professor at Iran’s University of Medical Sciences, who authored several textbooks. My mother was a faculty member at Shahid Beheshti University’s School of Nursing. This environment fostered my deep curiosity and a lifelong passion for learning.
Merging Science and Media
My interest in writing began in my teenage years. By age 13, I had become proficient in English and would read English newspapers to practice. I even had a piece published in the children’s section of an English-language magazine.
During my university years, I merged my academic studies with my passion for writing. I contributed to student publications and wrote a weekly column for “Pezeshki Emrooz” (Today’s Medicine), then Iran’s most widely circulated medical magazine, focusing on zoonotic diseases (illnesses shared by humans and animals). After graduating in 2003, I co-founded Iran’s first Congress of Small Animal Veterinary Medicine with Dr. Seyed Javid Al-Dawood. This event led to the establishment of the Iranian Association of Companion Animal Veterinarians. I also served as the editor-in-chief for “Majaleh-ye Dampezeshki,” the country’s oldest veterinary professional journal, and later became a member of the board of directors for the Iranian Veterinary Association.
Journalism in Iran
My professional journalism career began in 2005 at Shargh daily newspaper. In 2006, I joined the Sarmayeh daily, where I served as the head of the agriculture and commerce desks, gaining invaluable experience under veteran journalists like Bahman Ahmadi Amouei and Zhila Baniyaghoub.
Later, at Etemad Melli newspaper, I worked as an economic correspondent. I published several critical articles against the government’s economic policies, which resulted in numerous lawsuits being filed against me by various government organizations. After several newspapers were shut down, I took on the role of editor-in-chief for Donyaye Sabz, which was, at the time, Iran’s only weekly agricultural newspaper. I managed its publication for three years.

Immigration and International Work
In 2011, I immigrated to Canada, where a new chapter of my professional life began. I co-founded the online news website “Vancouvernameh” with two other distinguished journalists to cover news relevant to the Iranian-Canadian community. The site was well-received, but it eventually ceased operations following a controversial investigative report that led to legal challenges.
To address the lack of Persian-language resources on Canadian history, I translated and published “A Little History of Canada.” My work has also included serving as a political analyst for various research centers and appearing on television programs like CBC’s “Face State” in 2022. I have collaborated with international media outlets such as Iran International and Global News as a freelance investigative journalist, a role I continue to this day.
Through my combined experiences, I aim to provide a comprehensive and critical perspective to my audience, contributing to informed public discourse.
